Every year on September 21st, the International Day of Peace is observed globally. This day, which was declared official by the United Nations, represents our shared goal of a world free from conflict and unrest. The significance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is being highlighted a lot this year.

This event was established in 1981 by the United Nations Assembly. It is focused on one specific theme that reflects on current issues related to peace. The theme this year is “Cultivating a culture of peace”, it emphasizes the importance of encouraging an environment where peace is valued, nurtured, and promoted in our daily lives.

How do you define peace?
Peace is a stress-free state of security and calmness that comes when there’s no fighting or war, everything coexisting in perfect harmony and freedom. As this being said, during this day we must encourage individuals, communities, or nations to engage in activities that promote peace.

There are lots of activities that we can join in. We can join Educational programs, community events, social media campaigns, Volunteerism or even just having a moment of silence by ourselves. Peace is very essential to our well-being, it allows us to live without the fear of violence, encourages development, and promotes unity.

International Day of Peace is not just a day of reflection, it is a call for action. This day reminds us that everyone has the role of promoting peace. Whether it’s a small act of kindness or more effort in spreading your advocacy, as we celebrate this day, let us revive our commitment to creating a world where peace is not just an idea but a reality for everyone.

Together, we can make the world a safe space.

Session Questions:
1. In your own words, define peace.
2. What are the factors that you need to consider to have a peaceful environment??
3. How can you promote peace in your daily life?
