Stories of Hope: Chip

Last year, on May 06, 2023, I received a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder following a suicide attempt. In response, my parents decided to enroll me in a facility tailored to support individuals grappling with depression, addiction, and compulsive gambling. As an introvert, I initially hesitated to engage with others, but I formed meaningful connections with fellow residents on similar healing journeys.

During my month-long stay at the facility, one ritual deeply resonated with me: our daily meditation sessions intertwined with “The Purpose Driven Life” book discussions. These sessions became a sanctuary where we shared our innermost thoughts and insights on life. Through these exchanges, my peers provided invaluable feedback, enriching my understanding of myself and the world around me.

During our time together, a pivotal practice was the daily gratitude exercise, where we each listed five things we were thankful for. This simple yet profound ritual shifted my perspective, teaching me to appreciate intangible blessings as much as tangible ones. I realized the profound significance of elements like sunshine and rain, which, though often overlooked, play an equal role in shaping our experiences.

Before bidding farewell to the facility, a fellow resident presented me with a chip bearing the inscription, “Para sa araw na ito” (For this day). This token is a constant reminder to embrace the present moment and take each day as it comes, appreciating its inherent value and potential for growth.
